“Having the Gold Seal Certification is what’s going to move you forward as your career goes on. It’s not as difficult as you think it is. Learn your stuff, take your courses, stay abreast of what’s going on and it’ll all come together.”
Trevor Lippingwell, GSC, Construction Safety Officer
Trevor is a Construction Safety Officer for a General Contractor, who is very apt in remembering regulations. As part of his job he keeps the Health and Safety manuals up to date, performs inspections, orientations, and supports the management team making sure that everything that is done on-site is by the OHS plan and work safety regulations.
Trevor’s focus in Health and Safety has overpassed his interest in carpentry, which has now become mostly a hobby. “My career in construction began as a bricklayer’s helper, the more time I spent on-site, the more I realized that the safety stuff was changing and needed attention. I looked at that as being an up and coming career worth integrating myself. I find it integral to help people understand how to work safely and to go home alive every day. Thus, I went from brick laying to getting my first aid ticket. Eventually, I got my Construction Safety Officer (CSO) designation training down, and my career in safety took off from there.”
Trevor began working with Graham Construction six years ago. His employers took the opportunity to show him the different certificates available to aid him on his career path in Health and Safety. That’s when Trevor discovered the Gold Seal Certification. From that point forward, he set his sights on earning his Certification and in October 2016 proudly earned his credential.
“My motivation to want to pursue my Gold Seal Certification was caused by the always evolving field of Health and Safety. I want to prove to my employers and colleagues that I take care in keeping up with what is important in the field. Gold Seal Certification is recognized across Canada and is a step I’m taking towards doing more for my career. I see it as a higher level of education.”
