“It gives you a boost of confidence, it displays your competencies and capabilities a board of experts feel like you’re competent and capable to carry out your designated roles and responsibilities. Having your Gold Seal certification does give you that added sense of credibility To hang that certification in your office gives you a great sense of achievement.”
Tom Donnovan, GSC, QC Inspector, PCL Construction Management
Tom began his career as an electrician in Ireland. He discovered early on that being an electrician wasn’t exactly what he wanted to do. He always enjoyed being able to work on sites, so he decided to transition into Construction. Eventually, he obtained a QC Inspector role at PCL in Calgary, working on their airport runway project. Ever since, Tom has been with PCL and has worked on various civil works projects.
“It’s interesting work. Total culture change from the European construction industry, in a good way.” Tom discovered the Gold Seal Certification after a year of residing in Canada and working in the Canadian Construction industry. “As a way to ameliorate my career and further my education, I began searching for educational opportunities. That’s when I discovered the Gold Seal Certification. When I approached PCL about completing my Gold Seal PCL we got the ball rolling on that.”
Tom obtained his Gold Seal Certification in January 2017.
Tom’s motivation to get his Gold Seal Certification was caused by wanting something that was recognized throughout Canada. “It gives you another added dimension to your capabilities. It’s all well and good to be able to talk about your capabilities but to actually be
able to show some accreditation for them, it stays with you throughout your career.”
“It’s definitely an achievement, but it’s also a stepping stone to move up the ranks in terms of Gold Seal accreditation. I would say to anyone interested, it’s an invaluable accreditation. It means so much to go and get it. If you don’t succeed at first, try again. Never give up. The sense of pride you get by obtaining your accreditation, you can’t beat that feeling!”
