“Because I was an NCSO, which is an easier certification to get, I liked the appeal of getting a certification that communicates that I know what I’m talking about, and is accepted nationwide.”
Rose Marie Lloyd, GSC, Safety Advisor
Rose Marie is a Safety Advisor, which is a role she declared ‘she fell into by accident’; “I was the one girl in a construction office which needed a safety person… so, I volunteered.” Rose Marie grew up around the construction industry, as her family was always involved with it one way or the other.
At the time, she was also a project manager and estimator, thus her duty to revise plans brought her into her local construction association on a weekly basis. Rose Marie discovered Gold Seal Certification one day when she was visiting the Edmonton Construction Association during her weekly basis.
Rose Marie was one of the first candidates that wrote her Gold Seal examination when Gold Seal launched its safety designation – roughly ten years ago. Her motivations were simple for wanting to get her certification: a personal drive for change. “I was thinking of going out on my own and leaving my company. My plan was to get my GSC which would then help me find a new job, or help me legitimize my company more.”
One of the challenges she faced during her career was the number of NCSO-certified individuals in Alberta who, without investing due effort in their work, made the construction safety field seem less credible… “It was important for me to stand out from people who might have taken the education offered with the NCSO not as seriously as they should have. Having my Gold Seal helps me stand apart.”
She continued, “If the opportunity presents itself and someone in my company needed help in applying for their Gold Seal Certification, I would absolutely help them reach this goal. I’ve previously done some mentoring with a coworker who was thinking about getting their GSC.”
Rose Marie described some benefits she felt after obtaining her certification. “It gave me confidence to say I know what I’m talking about when it comes to safety. It’s definitely a conversation starter – out here in western Canada GSC isn’t widely known, especially in terms of Safety. Finally, it opens doors and sets you apart from other candidates in your area.” Her increase in confidence regarding her career not only gave her a sense of legitimacy, but also allowed her to have the confidence to speak with us about herself and her career goals, and led her to become one of our Success Stories!
“Go ahead and challenge yourself. It’s worth it. In the end, set yourself apart from every other provincial safety program out there. It’s worth to also to keep going post-certification to obtain your Professional Gold Seal.”
