“I would imagine it is hard to get the Gold Seal Certification just based on school; experience is as important to be successful in getting Gold Seal Certified. If you feel like it will benefit you or your employer, then you should get it.”
Marian Caprnka, GSC, Site Superintendent, MJ Dixon Construction Ltd.
Marian has been the site superintendent for 10 years with MJ Dixon Construction Ltd. After university, he came over to Canada from Europe and began to work in renovations and plumbing. He then began working for a demolition company as a foreman before making the switch to his current
role with MJ Dixon Construction Ltd.
When Marian was transitioning from being a foreman to a superintendent, he was required to get some additional education. He discovered that many of the project superintendent courses he was taking were credits that can be attributed to the Gold Seal Certification program. He didn’t know that he can also qualify for the program with his experience. He used the courses, paired with the experience he gained and qualified for the Gold Seal Certification program.
Marian believes that being certified is a great asset to have and that employers look for people who are certified. Now that he has received his Gold Seal Certification he feels a personal satisfaction in succeeding. He believes he has benefited from the courses by going through all the books and material. Having the Gold Seal Certification has also benefited the company he works for. “It’s also good for us. Certain job sites require you to have a Gold Seal Certified superintendent on the portfolio. It’s easier for them to get the jobs.”
