Malcolm Weston
“I would encourage anybody who wants to better themselves to start with the Gold Seal. It will increase your career opportunities; it opens a lot of avenues for you in your future career.”
Malcolm Weston, GSC, Construction Safety Officer
Malcolm is a Safety Officer. He was formerly with a glass company in Calgary. Here, he managed the safety program from start to finish including new hire orientations, WCB claims, modify work programs, looking after the company’s vehicle inspections, job site inspections, job hazard assessment reviews, near miss reviews, incident investigations, weekly toolbox meetings, and monthly safety meetings. Malcolm began working in safety approximately 6 years ago but has been involved in the construction industry for 38 years.
Originally in commercial construction, he noticed that Health and Safety was making a large impact in the industry with its changes to its regulations and implementations and necessities. Due to his age, Malcolm was looking to transition into a role that would be less physical. “Health and Safety is an area that will always be necessary and was a good career fit”, and so Malcolm decided to transition into the field.
Malcolm discovered the Gold Seal Certification when he was attending a Gold Seal Supervisor course where he received a detailed pamphlet about the program. Malcolm decided to pursue his Gold Seal Certification in 2016. His motivation for wanting to achieve his Gold Seal Certification was to improve himself to bring him a step above the competition. He made it a goal to achieve his certification as a personal expense and successfully earned his certification.
“It’s quite the accomplishment. I did my journeyman’s, I got my NCSO, but to achieve the Gold Seal Certification was the icing on the cake. That was just great to do!”
