Kevin Whitfield
“My Gold Seal certification is recognized no matter where I go. You can’t get better than that.”
Kevin Whitfield, GSC, Superintendent and Construction Manager
Kevin has been in the construction industry for the last 43 years, and chose to work in the trades after his father, who was a coal miner, encouraged Kevin to pursue a different field of employment rather than follow in his footsteps.
Kevin began his career working in the electrical field right out of high school. He worked first in residential electrical, then commercial electrical and finally landed himself in industrial electrical, which he found to be the most interesting of the three options.
Today, Kevin is an electrical instrumentation tool technician, superintendent and construction manager. His daily tasks typically involve: bridging a communication gap between contractors and engineers on site. In general, he makes sure that everything is occurring within the confines of regulations, and is completed on time.
Kevin knew about Gold Seal Certification when the certification program was first established in Canada. On July 5th , 2003, Kevin earned his Gold Seal Certification. He describes his motivation for earning his Gold Seal Certification as follows: “the Gold Seal was available, and opened more doors to expand my career prospects.” He continues, “30 years ago, there were so few Gold Seal Certified people it was an absolutely distinguishing advantage. Even to this day there are very few Gold Seal Certified people. The PMP certification exists, and I think ‘that’s nice to have’ but it doesn’t come from the Canadian Construction Association (CCA). There’s a lot of weight with the CCA that people don’t understand.”
Kevin proudly pushes the Gold Seal Certification to other project managers’ and superintendents, as he describes himself as a fan that continuously encourages others to pursue the certification. He describes that being a certified construction project manager has provided him with a distinctive career advantage, and displays that he is to date on training & education.
“GSC is recognized around the country. It’s just an extra step you can take that shows contractors and owners that there are qualified people who like getting the job done on time, and on budget. It shows everyone in the industry that I’m here because I care about my work, and I follow up on education. That’s what WE do as Gold Seal.”
