Jason Savoy
“It’s a great opportunity for personal development.”
Jason Savoy, GSC, Superintendent, EllisDon
Jason is a superintendent for EllisDon. His responsibilities vary from project to project and day to day which is one of the things he most enjoys about the position. “I really enjoy juggling a lot of things at the same time. I think that’s one of the magic abilities of a good superintendent, to keep a lot of things going in the air.” As superintendent, he generally manages all the work on site, dealing with foremen, other superintendents and subcontractors.
Jason started out as a kid straightening out a bucket of bent nails. In university he worked with a friend’s father in residential construction removing nails from old boards. During the summers while he attended York University for sculpture and visual art, he would work in the trades with carpenters. After he received his master’s degree, he began working in residential carpentry until he made the jump to supervisor for a residential multi-unit project, which eventually lead to his current position.
Jason heard about the Gold Seal Certification program from his employer. He views the Gold Seal Certification as a valuable credential for him. He had many years of experience but no credentials, so it was nice to get recognition for his years of experience in the field. He believes some of the main benefits of having his Gold Seal Certification include instilling confidence in your abilities with clients, on-going education and courses, and the fact that it makes both employees and employers more competitive in the market. “It boosts your confidence and self-esteem knowing that you measure up with the best of them.”
During the process of getting his certification, he was appreciative of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia and the support they provided. “They really went out of their way to make it easy and their courses were top notch.”
