“The Gold Seal Certification teaches you a better insight into how construction works and all the processes to accomplish all the managerial aspects of the job. It gives an individual a wider perspective of how a project is run and how to move forward on new projects.”

Ian Owens, GSC, Superintendent, Bird Construction

Ian is a Superintendent for Bird Construction. At the moment, he is working on a new recreational center in Calgary. He’s worked on building several schools and various different projects for the city of Calgary and private owners. His role involves looking after the day to day running of the site, dealing with owners and Architects, looking after the trades, safety, etc.

From an early age Ian pursued the trades with the encouragement of his father. He began working in construction as a Carpenter, and has been a Carpenter for 30 years working his way up eventually becoming a Superintendent. Daily, Ian handles a lot of questions in the morning regarding upcoming schedules, usually commencing his day with a meeting.

Ian discovered the Gold Seal Certification when he first moved to Canada 12 years ago and received his certification in June 2017. His motivation to achieve his Gold Seal Certification was to stay competitive in the field. His familiarity with the process of working on a job-site is a recognized asset to his team.

“The most valuable aspect of the Gold Seal for me was both the project management part, and the ethics course was really good, which actually became an eye-opener in regard to what you can and cannot accept and how the construction industry in total is trying to move forward and use ethics more.”

“Go for your Gold Seal Certification. Don’t wait. Start the process straight away because it takes time.”
