“Having my Gold Seal Certification shows the dedication I’ve put into my career and profession. It goes a long way on-site with being taken seriously. The Gold Seal Certification helps solidify who I am, my experience, and it helped me feel confident when I returned to work post-leave.”

Danielle Moe, GSC, Safety Manager, Ward Bros. Construction Ltd.

In 2004, Danielle’s career in the Canadian construction industry began. At the time, she worked in administration for a plumbing company in Calgary, Alberta. Her employers saw potential and encouraged her to pursue certification and education for construction safety. After some thought, she decided for herself that this would be a great opportunity for growth and the road for a great career.

Today, Danielle is the Safety Manager at Ward Bros. Construction Ltd. in Lethbridge, Alberta. She manages daily on-site programming, including conducting inspections, safety meetings, assisting individuals on-site with questions, and safe job procedures. “Helping these guys get home to their families is imperative for me. They are the safety on the job site, not me. I am only there to help instill safe practice and work measures that they apply when at work. At the end of the day, if they get to go home safely, then I’ve succeeded in my role.”

Ninety percent of Danielle’s work day is in the field. Her employment requires her to work in commercial construction, with a specialty for school modernization and upgrade work. “While working on school modernization, there are a lot of different people walking through the job site. We must make sure students and teachers are safe while we’re working. That, in and of itself, takes a lot of planning and organizing with the school board and teachers on-site.”

Danielle discovered the Gold Seal Certification through a conversation with a co-worker. Pre-certification, she chose to take a pause her career to enjoy some time to travel and start a family. Once returned from her maternity leave, she was ready to tackle the challenge of obtaining her Gold Seal Certification. “It was one of those things that I thought ‘why not have the knowledge and back myself up for my career.’” Danielle obtained her Gold Seal Certification on January 20th, 2017.

“Finally obtaining this certification feels surreal. It was more than just passing the exam; it was an excellent feeling of success. It’s a step forward in the right direction. It’s seriously one of the best things I’ve done for myself.”
