Chas Waitt
“The Gold Seal program is really well thought out. The construct of each course is relevant to what I do as a manager everyday. It really broadens your horizons. I’ve been lucky because the company I work for now has been supportive in driving continuous improvement, education, ensuring they have the best people working for them. I wanted my Gold Seal to show that I really have dedication to my craft. I believe in continuously improving my managing skills so I’m better prepared to adapt if need be.”
Chas Waitt, GSC, General Superintendent
Chas has been working in construction for the past 22 years. He’s always been a trade craft worker and has continually enjoyed working with his hands. Chas is both a Journeyman Carpenter and a Journeyman Blacksmith. “I really enjoy a tangible activity, which was my drive to work in this field for so long. It’s definitely a career choice I’m happy to have made.”
Chas has been a Site Superintendent for 16 years. His daily tasks comprise of managing job sites – including its staff and sub-contractors – as well as coordinating deliveries, materials, scheduling, and budget control. About a year ago, Chas was promoted to General Superintendent. With his promotion came new responsibilities, including supervising multiple sites, supporting multiple Site Superintendents, maintaining relationships with trades, helping plan training programs, and more! Site visits are an additional responsibility added to Chas’s workload that he takes tremendous care to perform. Site visits are an important aspect of his work that require special attention because these include keeping tabs on the ‘happiness factor’ of workers on job sites. Chas gets to know the workers and how motivated they are, allowing him to continuously maintain quality work standards for other employees. This ultimately leads to higher performance and communication between his team and sub-contractors.
Chas discovered the Gold Seal Certification after completing his Red Seal. “Once I got my Red Seal in carpentry I heard about the next step, the Gold Seal Certification. My advice is to always aim for the next step up, that higher designation and maintain a continuous improvement mentality. The Gold Seal Certification is a fantastic goal that allows you to show everyone you care about your career, role, and responsibilities. I care about my Tradecraft as a manager.”
Chas earned his Gold Seal Certification in October 2016.
“It takes dedication to complete the Gold Seal Certification. When you’re working full-time and most of the courses are after working hours, it can be hard to time manage, juggle family life, and have enough energy to motivate yourself to go and do it” When asked what he would say to others considering earning their Gold Seal Certification he replied: “Manage your time correctly, dedicate yourself to getting this designation as it’s valued in our industry. It labels you as dedicated to your trade, and skills. It displays you have the motivation to be successful.”
