Chad McDonald

“I want to have the highest level of certification I can possibly earn for my role. This way everyone I work with can see that I’m committed to my job. I like being taken seriously. Also, I want to be a positive role model for my daughter; I want to show her that hard work pays off.”

Chad McDonald, GSC, Environmental Health and Safety Advisor, Aecon Group Inc.

Chad is a proud father, who strives to be a positive role model for his daughter.

Chad is an environmental health and safety advisor at Aecon Group Inc. Part of his day-to-day responsibilities involve monitoring two large divisions of Aecon Group, ensuring workers comply with pertinent health and safety legislation. Chad is the COR auditor for both groups. He spends time scheduling training and completing accident investigations. In total, he’s been working for Aecon for 16 years.

Chad began working in the construction industry at a young age, thanks to his father, who had a helping hand in getting Chad into their union. Before obtaining his current role, Chad worked his way up from a labourer. He eventually moved into a union steward role for his local union in Toronto, and with that came some health and safety responsibilities. At that point he registered himself into some classes, and so did his company.

Chad learnt about Gold Seal Certification through his employers, who are avid believers in furthering employee training and education. His employers require their employees to be Gold Seal Certified to fulfill their role. Chad earned his Gold Seal Certification in January 2015.

Chad has been with the same company for a long time, and acknowledges that it is challenging to move from a role as a field level worker to one of much greater responsibility, including overseeing the safety of two teams. “Now that I’m Gold Seal certified I’m more comfortable in my role, because my certification communicates my knowledge and wisdom at my job. I’ve earned a lot of respect, but I don’t fool myself; there’s always more to learn.”

“GoldSeal Certification is a great resource and designation to have so that you’re held at a higher esteem by your peers, by clients, and by your employers. It’s very well regarded in the construction industry as a pinnacle to set your goals. It’s a designation you want to hold.”
