“If you’re thinking about taking proactive steps in continuing your education, then make sure that you’re investing in something that can truly help improve your career and that is the Gold Seal program.”
Carol Foster, GSC, HSEQ Manager, JSM Electrical Ltd.
Carol Foster didn’t always plan a career in construction health and safety. Back when she worked in aviation developing programs, working with regulatory bodies and finding her place on health and safety committees, she saw the construction industry as a shining light with endless opportunities. Today some 16 years later, Carol is an accomplished safety professional and sits on the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association (NLCA) board of directors as safety chair, and on the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association board of directors.
It was her employer that first brought Gold Seal to Carol’s attention. “Once I learned about the Gold Seal Certification, I added it to my bucket list. I had heard so many great things about the program. It’s important for all professionals to continue their education, as it can help them remain up-to-date and current within their professions. It gives the opportunity to help an individual grow and improve their skillset, making them a more valuable asset.”
In fact, they didn’t just bring it to her attention, her employer supported her every step of the way. “The Gold Seal stream is an important aspect within JSM,” agrees Carol, “and everyone is encouraged and supported in their quest to attain the certification. Education is key to furthering success.”
To many, Gold Seal Certification means much more than education and training, it’s also credibility and proof of experience. “A problem many women face working in the industry,” says Carol, “is getting others to take them seriously and listen to them. Especially if they don’t have any construction training.” As Canada’s recognized industry standard for the certification of construction management professionals, the Gold Seal Certified (GSC) designation says a lot about the excellence of the professional and the organization.
Many of Carol’s colleagues – including her boss – at JSM also hold their GSC as do many members of the boards on which Carol sits. They have all attained the highest standard of excellence in the industry, have proven industry experience, and are held in the highest regard.
Carol’s advice?
“Reach out to your local construction association for guidance. Set your goal to achieve the certification and network with others who have completed the certification. If you have the opportunity and the support, go for it – the opportunities are endless!”
