Alex Bird

“In the end, earning your Gold Seal Certification is going to work for the betterment of the company and yourself, so don’t delay.”

Alex Bird, GSC, Superintendent

Alex is a Superintendent employed with a general contractor which specializes in the construction management of a job-site. His role includes managing the day to day activities of the site including, safety, scheduling, etc.

Alex began his career in construction while still in high school. He began working at a small concrete forming company, and eventually changed his focus to residential construction. Eventually, Alex moved to Alberta to obtain his Journeyman ticket, and continued down his career path as a certified Red Seal Carpenter. Today, Alex is a successful Superintendent, and has been working in the construction industry for approximately 17 years.

At the time of Alex’s hiring with his current employer, the former Superintendent at that time, had just obtained his own Gold Seal Certification, ultimately sparking Alex’s curiosity for the certification. “I heard a few details about the Gold Seal Certification but I didn’t know too much about it. At that time, I was a carpenter and the Gold Seal Certification wasn’t very pertinent to me. However, the Superintendent at the time had explained what it was and it got me thinking about it for the future. When I got promoted to Superintendent I did some research on it and I decided the Gold Seal Certification was the next step I wanted to take for my career.”

Alex continued by describing what the Gold Seal Certification means to him. “The Gold Seal Certification, for me was, more than anything, to show my commitment to the trade. It’s a display that you, as an individual, expect excellence and want to see the construction industry progress – as a whole. It’s a great program for construction managers in all kinds of ways. Managers, estimators, Superintendent, Foremen, etc. In my opinion, as a manager in construction, the Gold Seal Certification is necessary. It’s really good to have something that certifies a person’s commitment, work ethic, and leadership quality.” Alex’s motivation for earning his Gold Seal Certification was wanting to prove to both himself and everyone that he is committed to his role and construction, that he applies himself to accomplish his goals, and to display his strong work ethic.

Alex has just recently earned his Gold Seal Certification and describes feeling a deep sense of pride and accomplishment when he discovered he passed the Gold Seal exam.
