Standard practices dominates CCA Board discussions

CCA’s Board met on September 8, 2022 in Calgary, Alberta for an in-person meeting and site visit kindly organized by the Calgary Construction Association. Here are the highlights of the meeting:

Meeting highlights

New CCA Strategic Plan – Owner and workforce priority

Following a significant engagement process and discussions at the Board table, CCA’s 2023-2025 Strategic Plan was approved. CCA will invest more resources on owner education to improve on fair contracting, alternative delivery models and other related issues, as well as increasing advocacy on immigration and other initiatives in support of the workforce.

National Advisory Councils – Focus on standard practices

Each National Advisory Council is working on at least one initiative to advance standard practices in the industry. The following are in progress, with further updates expected in November:

  • Webinar on How to read a contract supported by a CCA Guide.
  • Recommendations on immigration points by province and fit with construction.
  • Prepare a material/supply cost escalation guide and inflation best practices paper. Review and comment on Quebec’s approach for national application.
  • Prepare an overview of current procurement models and a webinar.
  • Develop a webinar on a top risk: Supply chain management – Mitigating the impact of inflation.
  • Review provided material and deliver a reference document on onerous clauses.

CCA annual member fees hold steady for 2023, increase for 2024

In recognition of the challenges faced by associations across Canada during the past few years due to COVID, the CCA board has decided to defer the normal 2 per cent dues increase to 2024. This is equivalent to approximately $180,000 in savings, at a time when CCA has been increasing its value to members. Over $50M was reimbursed to members on federal projects thanks to CCA’s intervention. CCA has also been championing the Western Canada Gateway Initiative, promoting construction as a career of choice, and offering new CCDC training, among many other initiatives. Our goal is to continue to drive more value – to integrated partner associations and the firms who are our members.

New CCA Truth and Reconciliation policy to be released

CCA has developed a new policy in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s calls to action, which we will be sharing shortly. As September 30 approaches, we encourage all associations and firms, who have not done so already, to develop their own policies.
