Hill Day 2024: Construction sector pushes for action on Canada’s economic future

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) hosted its annual Hill Day on November 19, 2024, bringing together close to 100 delegates representing all sectors of the construction industry to Ottawa. With Canada’s upcoming federal election in focus, the event underscored a critical message: “It’s not promises that build the economy – it’s construction.”

Over 75 meetings were held with parliamentarians, policy advisors, and key decision-makers, including ministers, parliamentary secretaries, and shadow cabinet members. Industry leaders used these one-on-one discussions to push for policies that will strengthen Canada’s construction sector and, in turn, drive national economic growth.

Key topics of discussion included the need to invest in long-term sustainable infrastructure solutions, grow our workforce through balanced immigration policies and better recruitment initiatives, and modernize procurement through fair competition, early contractor engagement, and balanced risk-sharing. Addressing these issues will enable the federal government to foster a strong construction sector capable of meeting Canada’s needs, from solving the housing crisis to driving long-term economic growth.

The day ended with a reception attended by over 100 Members of Parliament, Senators, and staff, making it CCA’s largest and most successful reception to date. The Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Labour and Seniors, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the importance of construction, the need for government accountability, and the value of collaboration between the federal government and industry stakeholders.

CCA extends its gratitude to the sponsors of this year’s Hill Day: EllisDon Construction, Graham, PCL Construction, Peter Kiewit Sons ULC, and Pomerleau.
