CCA Board of Directors – November 2020 update

CCA’s Board met on November 2, 2020 via zoom in our last meeting of this year; therefore there will be no report in December.  Here are the highlights of the meeting along with recent developments:

NO FEE INCREASE FOR 2021

Taking into consideration the continued challenges of COVID-19 in 2021, CCA’s board has approved the recommendation to waive the normal 2% annual fee increase as part of its overall approval of the 2021 annual plan and budget.  CCA will continue to manage its budget conservatively, recognizing there are many risks, as well as reasons to be optimistic, such as potential economic stimulus in the form of infrastructure investment, and promising developments with respect to a COVID-19 vaccine.

REQUEST FOR MINUTES

The Board discussed a request to make its minutes available and determined that these would add little value.  Any minutes that would be published would be out of date; minutes are approved by the Board of Directors at a subsequent meeting, which could be 2-3 months after the meeting.  Instead, the Board agreed that CCA should continue to publish the summary report. Your comments and any suggestions to improve the summary are welcome.

ADVOCACY

CCA launched National Construction Day on November 3rd, which was also the kick-off to Hill Day.  Given COVID-19, meetings have been set up over the next few weeks.  Minister McKenna, among other Ministers, as well as MPs from all parties will be meeting with CCA Association COOs and members to deliver the message about economic stimulus, unblocking federal dollars already assigned, risk sharing, cost reimbursement and workforce shortage. 40 meetings have been set up and another 8 are in progress. The strategy this year is to target the meetings to build connections with newer MP’s and key influencers.

PROGRESS ON 2020 ANNUAL PLAN

CCA has delivered on many important initiatives in 2020, despite the challenges of COVID-19, including most recently:

  • Talent Fits Here:  promoting construction as a career of choice
  • CCDC virtual seminars:  CCDC 2
  • CDBI virtual conference
  • Construction R&D portal, available on cca-acc.com

2021 NOMINATIONS

Thank you to all who have applied and volunteered your time and talents! The sub-committee will be meeting in December to prepare the slate of Board candidates for the AGM and the committee members for the new Board’s approval, following the AGM.  The AGM will be held virtually March 11, 2021 at 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. (ET).

INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY

Following on the important work already delivered, including the Best Practices Guide for Indigenous Engagement, the Business Case for Diversity, the Student Outreach Toolkit and the launch of the Talent Fits Here Campaign, CCA will be striking a working group to discuss what might our role be in combatting racism in construction.

INTER-PROVINCIAL TRADE BARRIERS

CCA and member are concerned by a trend by governments at all levels to impose regional preferences in procurement. In line with our policies, CCA will, with sensitivity to regional contexts and the health and safety of all concerned, continue to assertively advocate for the free and unfettered movement of construction materials, services and personnel within Canada and will continue to oppose regional barriers and preference policies.
