CCA Excellence in Innovation

The CCA Excellence in Innovation Award recognizes outstanding CCA member firms who have implemented innovative construction practices within the past two years. These practices must have been a “first-time” use or adoption for use in Canada, but may have been previously applied or used elsewhere.

The recipient is awarded with the Hugh R. Montgomery Memorial Trophy, which commemorates the life and work of Hugh R. Montgomery, a past president of CCA who gave generously of his time and experience for the general well-being of the industry.

Ledcor Pipeline Ltd.

Coastal GasLink's 48-inch diameter pipeline extending between Dawson Creek and the LNG Canada Facility in Kitimat, BC, required navigating challenging construction terrain, including many steep slopes through the Rocky Mountains. The Ledcor Project team was determined to mitigate the numerous risks involved and identified that a trenchless installation method would be the most suitable at this location - giving rise to the steep slope Raise Bore.

Ledcor's innovative approach achieved safety enhancements, increased productivity, and put environmental responsibility at the forefront.

Awards are judged by an assigned CCA committee. Outside consultation is sometimes utilized to assist in the judging process. If the judging committee feels that no suitable candidate has been nominated, the award will not be presented. All awards are presented at CCA’s annual conference.

Fill out the form below to apply. The submission deadline for the 2024/25 CCA National Awards is December 2, 2024. No submissions shall be accepted following the deadline.

Nominations for the awards must be no longer than five pages (not including the nomination form and supporting appendices) and must include a narrative based on the criteria on the submission form. A minimum of 7 hi-res pictures and/or videos, directly relating to the submission content, must accompany the submission.

The contents of this entry become the property of the CCA. CCA shall have the right to make all text and photographs available for publication without compensation, real or implied, and without claim by contestants against the judging committee, CCA or its staff.

With regard to any detailed project information provided in this application, all applicable project parties are aware of this submission, and have agreed that the information contained can be used in CCA awards presentation videos, in CCA publications promoting the awards and other CCA communications materials .

Nominations for this award must be no longer than 5 pages (not including nomination form and supporting appendices), and must include a narrative based on the criteria below. Each submission will be scored with equal points on the following criteria, with the top three criteria for each submission being considered in the award selection.*
- The submission explains the nature of the innovation and provides details of the relevant improvements to safety and/or health, productivity, predictability, profitability, environmental impact and/or values as a sustainable or long-term solution (repeatability) as well as design innovation addressing a challenge to which there is no ready answer.
- The submission details the sources for the innovation, including the entrepreneurial/financial risk taken by all parties involved in its implementation.
- The submission demonstrates “the company or firm’s ability to create a culture for innovation.”
- This innovation contains features that could be protected by patent rights, and the submission is accompanied by written evidence to show that the necessary steps have been taken to secure the requisite legal protection. The Canadian Construction Association cannot assume any responsibility for “prior disclosure” in advance of a patent application.
